New online web comic and news

I'm always up for helping to promote the work of a reader

Mark Iradian writes:

Just wanted to inform you about a webcomic I’m writing, Chronicles of Garas, and it’s new location. Some of you may heard of this comic, while most of you are wondering what the hell I’m talking about it. Chronicles of Garas is a dark tech fantasy based on an online Dungeons and Dragons game. The basic storyline follows several individuals in a world where muskets are slowly replacing the bow, magic is mundane skill, and orcs have drinking games with humans. The artwork is done by my partner in crime, Elshad Kasumov, as you can see is quite talented with the pencil.

What are you waiting for? Click.

Sky Captain Freaking Rules!!!!!!

When I first saw the trailer for Sky Captain I instantly came to the realization that I needed to see this film. Unfortunately I never made it to the theaters. When I received the DVD for the film I instantly loaded into the DVD player and gazed in awe at how beautiful stunning this film is.

The Story
The film opens with a stunning sequence of a zeppelin floating in the sky during a winter evening docking at the Empire State Building. On the blimp is a scientist with a warning to his former co-worker Dr. Jenkins that he is in danger. Jenkins contacts the Chronicle reporter Polly Perkins played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Polly is a hard-nosed, aggressive reporter who constantly puts her life in danger in pursuit of a story. She is a very similar to the Lois Lane character, the archetype of the damsel in distress.

Polly secretly meets with Dr. Jenkins at the theater during a showing of the Wizard of Oz. This is a nice inclusion into the film there is a similar scene from the Wizard of Oz at the end of the film. Jenkins informs Polly that he is in danger and that he is the last of the eleven scientists that have gone missing at the hands of the mad scientist Totenkoph.

At that moment enormous robots attack New York City with little opposition from the police. Unable to stop these massive machines, the police contact Sky Captain (portrayed by Jude Law) who swoops in to the city in his outfitted P-40. With a few “unique toys” Sky Captain easily stops the robots from destroying New York City.

Returning to the base Sky Captain, with the help of his friend Dex, (played by Giovanni Ribisi) are attempting to solve the mystery of these robots. Polly intrudes onto the base with a deal to Sky Captain that she will provide information to help solve this mystery if she can have the story. It becomes clear that Sky Captain and Polly have a past as she calls him by his real name, Joseph Sullivan. Polly and Sky captain agree to an alliance to stop Totenkoph and discover what he is planning.

At that point the invaders return attacking the Sky Captains base and abducting Dex who was tracking where these machines originate. Dex leaves a map of his findings for Sky Captain and with a series of clues travel around the globe searching for Totenkoph. Following clues eventually leads Sky Captain to his lair where we discover Totenkoph’s ultimate plan that can destroy Earth!

Bonus Materials
A series of great featurettes Brave New World and The Art of World of Tomorrow go into the making of this amazing film. A lot of information is provided including how Kerry Conran developed this film on his own with a six minute short that is also included on this DVD. Two different commentaries by producer Jon Avnet and writer and director Kerry Conran are also available.

Parting Thoughts
After viewing this film I wish I had experienced it in the theaters. This is a great movie that’s story resembles the old 30’s and 40’s Saturday morning serials that inspired George Lucas to write Star Wars. The characters of Sky Captain remind me of the love / hate relationship of Indiana Jones and Marian from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I loved Paltrow’s portrayal of Polly but I’m not sold on Jude Law. He did a good job, but I had a hard time accepting him as the swashbuckling hero Sky Captain. The story, while good, plays second to the visuals of this film. Kerry has taken the look of a period science fiction serial and improved upon its effects making gorgeous a work of art.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is available to purchase at Amazon.com

Light Up Mini-Figure!!!!

Yesterday we received the invitation for a party hosted by LEGO during Toy Fair. Check it out. Its a first look at Anakin mini figure for Episode III. Normally this is not that big of a deal but this mini figure has something different! When you depress his head the lightsaber lights up. We have inquired into LEGO if all Episode III mini figures will have this functionality. DEVELOPING......

http://www.millionaireplayboy.com/toys/legoanakin.php

UPDATE
We heard from LEGO. They wouldn't answer my question about if all the Episode III mini-figures will have light up lightsabers. They did say this:

"I can't answer that just yet (not until February 1) but I will tell you that there is more than one light-up minifigure"

I would believe that all the new Jedi mini-figures will have this functionality. Looking around the web I saw a couple of different characters. My hope is that they will sell these mini-figures seperatly from the LEGO sets. How sweet would that be. As always we will find out as soon as possible!

I can just smell Toy Fair

We're busy rounding up everything we need for Toy Fair next month in NY. As we get preparations ready, I keep remembering the smell of Toy Fair. Though slightly offensive, it's certainly exciting. How to describe how Toy Fair smells? I guess it's a street vendor's burnt peanuts. I've been to New York several more times than I've been to just Toy Fair, and I don't associate that smell with New York in general, its just Toy Fair. Maybe it's part stale smoke in the stairwells. But there is definately burning, but sweet smell that I associate with Toy Fair.

Our count-down is up on the MPb homepage. 37 days from today. Either that's too much time or too little time depending on who you are. I've also set up our Toy Fair 05 landing page, this will be the beginning of all of our coverage, and is worth bookmarking.

Here are the big questions we have... feel free to add a comment here or at the new Toy Fair Question thread on our message board...
---------------
1. What's up with Xevoz?

2. Will we get a Masterpiece Soundwave? What are the new Alternators?

3. More Batman villians? Who?

4. I need to see more Minimates
---------------
Like I said, I'm getting so excited I can smell it. We'll bring you the goods, so be sure to stay tuned here, and MillionairePlayboy.com

Launch?? I said LUNCH

Welcome to our Blog
We set this up to help supplement our 2005 Toy Fair Coverage. We'll have loads of coverage and pics on our site, but we'll check in and post some news and goings on from the show as we can.

This will also give you a little behind-the-scenes action of the real broke-married-guys behind MillionairePlayboy. But we promise not to tell you how much math class sucks and that our mood is blah.

Feel free to add comments...
Thanks for popping by,
Mr. Stinkhead and the MPb crew.

Oh, here's a look at an upcoming review. This thing is sweet!

Stinkin' kids!

I may have told you some stinkin' kids have been dicking with my yard.

It started with my little light-up candy cane last month.

Today they knocked over the cement urn planters we were using as ashtrays. Both of them. I'm not happy. P.O.P is getting a little freaked out.

I'd say once or twice a week, there is some new piece of trash in our yard, or something is amiss.

I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem. I'm going to bust this guy on camera. Then I'm going to patch it into my PC to get a screen grab. Then I'm going to print out that picture on a series of fliers and litter the neighborhood with said fliers that say "Bedwetters Anonymous"

No, that's too easy, too childish. I will figure out who it is, and where they live (they're local) and then break a window a night for a week, with a gasoline soaked brick. I won't light the brick on fire, mind you. So chill yourself.

I'm loving this Meister I got from BriansToys.com The review is now up.

let's complain one more time!

I just watched the Star Wars DVDs, and let me preface this by saying that these movies are amazing. After watching the documentary on the extra disc, I'm even more in awe of Lucas' work.

Now, I will never, ever ever ever ever understand why he soiled the Return of the Jedi's most excellent Jabba palace scenes with the musical number. Is there anyone over 8 who likes this? I mean sure we can all complain about Jar Jar and the fart jokes in Episode I. But this is the classic trilogy here. CLASSIC. I can see why he'd want to put in more X-Wings, or even the Jabba scene in A New Hope. Or anything else really (sans the Han/Greedo debauchery). But this musical number is truely the sore on the Lucas franchise. Am I right?

Ghost Rider

I love the Ghost Rider Minimate, but he really does need a motorcycle.
I found this one that came with one of the MegaBlok Alien Agency sets.

He can't grab the handle bars, but it fits him pretty well.
It came from this set.

Leave (off the end)ing Las Vegas

Just recently I put up a glowing review of the TV show Las Vegas, currently airing at 9pm Mondays on NBC. We got the Season 1 Box set, and I am enjoying it thoroughly.

However, I'm noticing a disturbing habit the show is making. At the end of later episodes (in Season 1) and both of the Season 2 episodes I've seen, they wrap up the show with everyone lounging around laughing about the day's events, making horrible puns. That was alright for DinoRiders, but that was a kids' show in the 80s. This is neither a kids' show or the 80s.

I love this show, but I can see myself changing channels as soon as the main action is wrapped up. I know what will be in that final segment before the credits.

Sean Astin = Whiny Bitch

For Christmas this year I bought my brother the Sean Astin book "There, and Back Again." The book details his life on the set of the Lord of the Rings movies. Now I always liked Sean Astin as an actor. I love The Goonies and the movie Rudy. He is one of those actors that is in a lot of movies that appears when you least expect it. He is a good actor.

I borrowed the book and I am half way through it and all I can say is that Sean Astin is a whiny bitch. All he does is complain about stuff. The book begins with his experience on the movie Encino Man. All he does is complain that he has to be in that film. Then he goes on to complain about a number of other films that didn't work out right until he played Sam in the Lord of the Rings.

What is really sad is that he admits that he only got paid $250,000 for playing Sam. And that is for all three films!!!!!
Now sure everybody complains but what is the point on putting a book out about it!

Stinkhead Jr.

The Princess of Power and I got a cat this weekend. It was her Christmas present.
His name is Charlie, he's 8 months old (he's big for a "kitten" but they said he won't get too much bigger)

This cat has only made me sneeze a few times, and that was after sleeping on my head. He is not allowed in my basement because he wants to jump on the playmobil shelf.

Here is a small gallery of pics if you're really that interested.

I'm hoping to convince the Princess of Power that we can use Charlie to set up a site like LittleGrayGuy.com (nsfw) heh heh.

Christmas Deleted

Yesterday the wife and I took down the Christmas decorations yesterday. It seems like I just put them up and now they are gone. Christmas came and went really fast this year. Oh well. Only 11 more months until I carry all the boxes of decorations back down from the attic.

dillusions of rock.

So tonight a few friends and I are getting together to jam. They play guitar (switching between rhythm and lead) and I beat on my drum set. A friend gave it to me. It has a snare, kick drum, three toms, two cymbals and a high hat. Nice guy, huh? Anyway, we get together about every three months to play and just have a great booze filled time. Of course after about eight bronsons we don't sound as good as we did when we started..... but we think we sound better! haha!!

Sweetness comes in the mail

I'm expecting a major haul today. First off, I'm supposed to get Transformer's Alternator Meister from the fine folks at Brian's Toys for a review next week. Hopefully everything will be delivered without a hitch and I can shoot all weekend. I still have to do my Microman Batman review too!

Oh, and I got a great deal on a dual-layer DVD burner from NewEgg.com, which should be arriving today as well.

One is Fed/Ex, the other is UPS... it'll be like that DHL commercial where they're racing each other to my doorstep! (yeah right)

That's a Big Boy!!!!

I have been reading about steam locomotives lately and came across the old Union Pacific Big Boys. Check this baby out. This is the largest steam locomotive ever made.

Birth, School, Metallica, Therapy?

Paramount DVD sent me the Metallica movie "Some Kind of Monster" to review for the site. I plan on watching it tonight for a review next week but I am a bit scared to watch it. I didn't see the film in theaters so tonight will be my first viewing. Why am I scared? Because everything I have read about it makes Metallica look weak instead of the Metal Giants they are. Obviously I am going to keep an open mind while watching it but this may not be the Metallica I remember.

Herman is my designer...

I want to take some decorating tips from a famous designer. Herman... Pee-Wee Herman. I have been watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse I got for Christmas on DVD.... and all those feelings from when I was a kid are rushing back. Feelings like I want that. Now that I'm an adult, those feelings are replaced with I NEED that and where did I leave my beer?

You're probably familiar with my directions for building a working light-up
Batphone, which has met some great response.

In the tradition of this step-by-step, DIY Network reject article, the next item I want to create is....

Jombi's Box from Pee-Wee's playhouse!!

That's right, I want an oblong, jewel-encrusted box to leave in my basement. It will house a genie! That genie will grant me a wish! Well actually, I have these visions in my head of my friends getting drunk, putting their head up through the bottom, and spending the entire night talking to people from inside the box.
Hilarious!

It will be tough. All I did with the Batphone was get an old no-dial phone and learn how to add lights to the ringer. This will involve sawing wood and if you see the thing, there's not a 90° angle on it.
It will be tough, can it be done? We'll see.

Updates... to my brain

The other thing we wanted to use this blog for was posting random crap that maybe doesn't belong on MPb the magazine... small adventures and thoughts... plus things that are coming up on the site.
For example.
----------
I have finally purchased my last Xevo. I now actually have one of each. (It was Iron Spectre, the figure that came with the carrying case, I couldn't spend $30 on a single Xevo, but now it was on sale for $12)

I'm going to make some phatty wall papers with pics of all the Xevoz, some more action shots. Maybe some more customizing.
---------
I'm wrapping up my Playmobil Gameshow set. I've had this done for awhile, but making the directions was so daunting to me. I hope to have it up by Toy Fair (especially since we'll be busy getting ready)
---------

I will have a review of some of the new Transformers Alternators up next week. We just finally reviewed 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime, and declared it the MPb Toy of the Year

---------
Jager has a new vinyl article going up next week as well. It looks pretty sweet. You'll dig it.

Articles by Lando da Pimp and Brutilus are also around the corner.

Getting ready...

Looks like blog, smells like blog... it is blog! This cannot be! All gelphlings are dead! You're not dead!

Anyway, we at MPb are setting up a blog to help our Toy Fair 2005 coverage be as extensive as possible. We'll post here as we can, but there will be loads of pics and updates on our regular site
MillionairePlayboy.com; there will be a big Toy Fair icon on the homepage once we get started.

First thing I want to do is thank our sponsors who helped us to be able to afford hitting the show this year. I'd ask that you take some time and check out each one of our wonderful sponsors.
